Privacy Policy

Effective date: May 13, 2026

Introduction

This is the privacy policy for Drift, the daily word etymology game available at playdrift.today. This policy explains what information is collected when you play, how it is used, and what control you have over it. Effective date: May 13, 2026.

What Drift Does Not Collect

Drift is designed to be played without accounts, tracking, or any form of personal data collection:

  • Drift does not require account creation or login of any kind.
  • No name, email address, or any personally identifying information is collected.
  • No data is transmitted to any server during gameplay. Your guesses, streaks, and preferences never leave your browser.
  • Drift does not use Google Analytics, Mixpanel, or any third-party analytics platform. Game event data (such as puzzle completion) is sent to Drift's own anonymous backend — no third party receives it.

Data Stored on Your Device

Drift stores game data directly in your browser using localStorage. This data never leaves your device and is never transmitted to any server. The following keys are used:

drift_v3

Your primary game state: current streak, best streak, total games played, win rate, score distribution across all guess attempts (1–6 and DNF), your complete game history, in-progress game state (so a page refresh doesn't lose your guesses), and your display preference (light, dark, or system mode).

drift_v2

A legacy storage key from a previous version of the game. If present, Drift migrates it to drift_v3 on your next visit, preserving your streak. This key is no longer written after migration.

drift_device_id

An anonymous UUID generated randomly on your first visit. Used as a session identifier for Drift's own anonymous analytics backend. It contains no personal information — it is a random string like 4f8a2c1e-… It is not shared with any third party.

drift_player_id

A second anonymous UUID used as a stable cross-session identity anchor in Drift's own analytics. Like drift_device_id, it is a random string with no personal meaning and is never shared with any third party.

Clearing your browser's site data for playdrift.today, or using a private/incognito window, will erase all of the above. Your streak and history cannot be recovered after clearing.

Google AdSense and Advertising

Drift uses or intends to use Google AdSense to display advertisements. Google AdSense uses cookies to serve ads based on prior visits to this site and other sites on the internet.

Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to users based on their visit to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.

You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out via the Network Advertising Initiative opt-out page.

For more information on how Google uses data when you use its partners' sites, see Google's Privacy Policy.

Third-Party Services

Drift currently loads no third-party scripts. When Google AdSense is enabled, Google will become a third-party service as described above.

Cookies

Drift itself does not set any first-party cookies. localStorage is used for game data — this is not a cookie and is not sent with web requests.

Google AdSense, when active, will set cookies for advertising purposes. You can control cookie settings through your browser settings or the opt-out links above.

Children's Privacy

Drift is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided information to this site, please contact us at the address below and we will take steps to remove that information.

Changes to This Policy

This privacy policy may be updated from time to time. The effective date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent version. Continued use of Drift after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
